What is Coaching? Coaching is a process with a purpose: to get the client going in creating the best life he or she could possibly have, in both the personal and professional realms. Coach and client together will work for powerful self discovery that creates a vision and direction for developing competencies that will support essential actions on the part of the client. During the process, the client will make significant gains in objectives, measuring his or her progress, and getting vital support from the coach for introducing important changes in their behavior, thinking, beliefs and communication. The Thought to Action Coaching Cycle is about getting the client those results. As for the importance of cycles in personal change work, our change and evolution doesn´t really come to end. You can liken the coaching process to building a house. First there is the idea that it´s time for a new house. The process is set off when the future homeowner makes a mental picture and has the desire to actually builde the real and concrete structure. In the Evaluation phase, we take a look at the terrain, test the soil, getting to know the site we'll be building on. Then in the Construction phase, we're building a solid foundation (for the client this is beliefs, values and life purpose) so the new house will stand strong. When that foundation is ready, then we can put together the scaffolding, a basic structure to build upon. That would be the Goal Formulation phase of coaching. Then when the scaffolding is ready, the client can start to really carry out the building process, putting up the walls, putting in the floors and getting everything ready. As the steps go through to completion, there comes the time when the house is ready for moving in. Living in a new house can be a big deal. It depends on how much has been changed, just how new the new living space is. It may be cruciallly important to prepare oneself to move into a new place. This would be the Transformation phase in coaching, where we look into limiting beliefs, changing self-concept and all other pattern changes that must take place to be able to live in a new place. And once that move has been sucessfully undertaken, then we are finally ready to settle in and have an open house to celebrate the new home. That is like the final Consolidation phase of coaching, that ends the cycle, with celebration and and overview of the whole process. 1. Assessment: Initial phase of coaching in which Coach e Coachee determine the scope of the Coaching and the global goals or themes of the beginning of the cycle. e as metas globais do ciclo a iniciar. This phase includes evaluations by way of interviews and questionnaires. In business contexts, the assessment can include the performance reviews of the Coachee. 2. Foundations: The Coach and the Coachee construct the necessary foundations to reach new levels of expression and performance. This includes an alignment of the change process with one´s world view, life purpose and core values. For Executive Coaching, there is also an alignment of the individual's purpose with that of the organization. The Construction phase also includes Systems Thinking to broaden the client's model of the world. 3. Formulation: The Coach and the Coachee formulating priority goals for the current coaching cycle. The goals are measurable, with action plans and should provoke significant changes during the Coaching Cycle. 4. Implementation: Once the goals are set, the Coach and the Coachee work on implementing the action plan, with a special focus on the strategies and resources necessary for the Coachee to carry out his or her plan. 5. Transformation: In this phase, the Coach works together with the Coachee to support the overcoming of obstacles and difficulties, transforming limiting beliefs and assumptions, indesirable behaviors and ineffective stategies that appear along the way. 6. Consolidation: The Coach and the Coachee work together to conclude, consolidate and celebrate the acheivements, learnings and experiences of the whole process. The Client prepares him or her self to go forward on his or her own with regard to those matters which he or she has already transformed and becomes aware of unfinished business which may warrant another coaching cycle. The Coach and the Coachee make a decision about starting a new cycle, going into a maintance phase or ending the coaching all together.
